Stormgate Game Modes: What Can We Expect?

The Stormgate beta is coming in 2023, with the game promising to be a social RTS for everyone. However, it’s always going to be a tough job pleasing everyone, especially in a genre like RTS – let’s take a look at Stormgate’s game modes and what we can expect from them.

Stormgate Game Modes

Stormgate is set to have a ton of officially supported modes, which aim to give just about everyone something to do in the game. As always in RTS, competitive 1v1 will be a key focus, but other modes won’t be left behind.

Here are the game modes that Stormgate will officially support upon release:

The Infernal Hosts are one of Stormgate’s playable races.

1v1 Player vs Player

A core game mode in Stormgate will be the competitive 1v1 mode. As an RTS standard, this is where a key focus of the game’s competitive and esports side will come in.

The game may even see separate balance patches and units in 1v1 compared to other modes in order to make the game as balanced and approachable as possible.

3v3 Player vs Player

3v3 will be another core mode in Stormgate. This is where players will be able to get into the action with their friends and the overall gameplay will diverge from 1v1.

Frost Giant have already confirmed that 3v3 will see significant changes from other RTS games. For example, there will be win conditions other than eliminating opponents and being eliminated won’t completely remove players from the game.

Full details for the 3v3 mode are still yet to be revealed, however, it’ll definitely be a breath of fresh air for team-game RTS fans.

So far, it’s also unclear if modes like 2v2, 4v4, or free for all will be supported.

Solo & Co-op Campaign

Another RTS staple that will come in as a Stormgate game mode is the campaign. Based on various interviews, we’re in for a lengthy, compelling story that will be well worth the wait.

The Stormgate team are planning for the game to last for years, which includes new campaign missions fleshing out the story post-release. Best of all, the campaign will not only be a single player experience, but will have a cooperative option.

Co-op vs AI

A fan-favorite mode in co-op vs AI will also be coming to Stormgate. Similar to Starcraft 2’s co-op missions, players will be able to take on challenges with their friends against the AI.

This mode is likely to be another key one, with Frost Giant members like Kevin “Monk” Dong often highlighting how popular the game was in Starcraft 2. We’re very likely to see a ton of exciting missions on launch and many more as the game gets more content.

Custom Games/Arcade

Last but not least come arcade games, which are, again, another RTS classic. Almost all RTS fans have memories of firing up a good old custom game like tower defense, Dota, or many others and seeing the hours melt away.

Custom games are the perfect place to take a break from the competitive side of an RTS and there are already massive plans to make them shine in Stormgate. We’ll definitely see a huge range of arcade games once the game and map editor are out.
